Voter Turnout

For just about anyone who knows me this rant comes as no surprise! Last night there were 4 by-elections held across Canada. One in Nova Scotia, 2 in Quebec and one in BC. I can understand if the general public had no idea about this but the people living in those riding's would have seen elections signs up for the past 3 weeks. So why then was the average voter turn out in the 4 riding's 31.1% of registered voters. For some reason Canadians have decided that voting just isn't worth the effort any more, that living in a free democratic society is too much work. The amount of times I've heard the excuse "no party is perfect so why vote". I'm not saying that any party is perfect and that someday there will be a perfect government with a perfect Prime Minister who will never make anyone angry. Nor am I saying that if you don't vote you can't complain, cause you're going to do it anyways and probably louder than anyone one else. What I'm saying is that it is your duty as a tax paying citizen to vote. You are a Canadian citizen, with all the benefits that come with it, the right to go to school, to have free health care, to recieve assistance when you're out of work and you pay taxes to get all of those things. The one thing you are asked to do in return is to vote during an election. It's what you're paying for isn't is. Don't you at least want to have a say in who is make the decision of where your money goes. It isn't required that you serve any time in the military, or that you volunteer for a charity or give any of yourself to anyone. But when an election is called you must decided who you dislike the least and put an "X" beside their name. And you get to do it in secret, nobody has to know who you voted for, that is your "right". What's even more amazing is that Canada has this wonderful organization called Elections Canada that has all kinds of rules and regulations in place to make voting easier. It's not like there is one central location that everyone in your riding has to stand in long lines to vote at. There are many, many locations all over the riding and there is usually one within 5 km of your house (that's walking distance, no car is no excuse). Elections Canada makes sure that there is no one from the party standing at the entrance harassing you for you vote, they aren't even allowed to have signs visible from the front door of the voting location. It's really unfortunate that freedom comes at such a personal sacrafice to you but get over it and vote.

Nobel Speech Prize

This is the rant that started all other rants! I must preface this with the fact that I'm not anti-Obama. He's won over the hearts of many and it's not easy to find a politician who has some good ideas partnered with the ability to sell those ideas to the general public. But is he worthy of a Nobel Prize? I suppose I'm just joining the masses in this giant debate that will lead to nowhere. It's not like they're going to take it away from him because enough people wrote about it in their blogs. But what where they thinking? Are they just giving away Nobel Prizes like toys from a McDonald's Happy Meal? "And will that be a boy Nobel Prize or a girl Nobel Prize Mr. Obama?" If they wanted to justify it better to the world they should have called it the Nobel Speech Prize. In that case I should get one aswell because I talk some really good smack too! What I don't understand is that he's been in office for like 30 seconds. They could have atleast given him the oppertunity to earn it on his own merits. What are they going to give him if he actually accomplishes anything? A second Nobel Prize is kind of redundant! But hey, what do I know!

Welcome to my rant!

So I have decided to start a blog because I love to talk and after 5 blissful years of marriage my husband has finally stopped listening to me. To be perfectly honest I don't think that he ever actually listened but now he's stopped even acknowledging that I'm speaking! So all of you out there in the internet universe get to fill the void that he has left behind. This will now be my venue to rant about all the things that drive me crazy, hence the name "Seriously People ... Seriously!" Ask anyone who knows me and they'll tell you that I have an opinion on everything, especially things I know nothing about and like everyone one else I just love to express it, as loudly and as often as I can! So thanks for listening and enjoy!
